A Writing Experiment

G’day! My name is Andrew and I live in Phuket, Thailand. I work at QSI International School where I teach ESL and Writing. I’m using wordpress.com along with some of my students for the first time because I want to improve my students’ writing ability, and I hope that this will be a valuable tool that they will be able to use every day. I have taught at QSI for over three years and up until now, I have assessed my students using the traditional pen and paper approach. Now with the ever-increasing influence of technology on the lives of my students, I want to try to use the internet to help them harness their own creative power!

I would be very interested to hear from anyone who is involved in, or who has been involved in, a similar project. My email address is ajarnadm@gmail.com.

Goings On

Well, after three weeks of school, my students have begun to experiment with the idea of web logging as a form of assessment and have produced some work which appears on this site in draft form. I am hoping that this form of assessment will be popular among the students and that they will want to be actively involved in their own learning through this project. We still have a few slow starters but it seems to be proving popular among those who have experimented with this type of technology, and a few of my students have.

The students have made their own web blogs, but they are still relying on me to motivate them to write. I have tried to encourage the students to be creative in the design of the layout of their pages and be sensitive to the reader. I want them to feel a sense of freedom and confidence as they write while at the same time conform to the conventions of style and presentation.

New Beginnings

With a few hicups getting access to computers at the school (there was an electrical fire in the computer lab) we are only just starting to experiment with the idea of web logs. Some of my students have never had a blog before and there have been a few technical problems getting signed up but I’m sure once these have been ironed out, it will be relatively smooth sailing.
